💪 What is Work?

In Physics, work is said to be done when a force applied on an object causes it to move in the direction of the force.

📌 Formula
W = F × S
  • ✅ SI Unit = Joule (J)
  • ✅ Scalar Quantity
  • ✅ 1 Joule = Work done by 1 N force moving an object by 1 m.

⚡ Types of Work

Type Meaning
😊 Positive Work Force and displacement are in the same direction.
😐 Zero Work Force is perpendicular to displacement.
😞 Negative Work Force acts opposite to displacement.

⚡ Energy

Energy is the ability to do work.

  • 🔹 SI Unit = Joule (J)
  • 🔹 Mechanical Energy = Kinetic Energy + Potential Energy

🏃 Kinetic Energy (KE)

Energy possessed due to motion.

Formula
KE = ½ mv²
  • 🚀 Depends upon mass and velocity.
  • 🚀 If velocity doubles, kinetic energy becomes four times.

🪨 Potential Energy (PE)

Energy possessed due to position or height.

Formula
PE = mgh
  • ⬆️ Greater height → Greater Potential Energy
  • ⚖️ Greater mass → Greater Potential Energy

🔄 Work-Energy Theorem

Work done on a body is equal to the change in its kinetic energy.

Formula
W = ΔKE

♻️ Law of Conservation of Energy

Energy can neither be created nor destroyed. It only changes from one form into another.

Total Energy
Mechanical Energy = KE + PE

⚙️ Power

Power is the rate of doing work.

Formula
Power = Work / Time
P = W / t
  • ⚡ SI Unit = Watt (W)
  • ⚡ 1 kWh = 3.6 × 106 Joules

🛠️ Simple Machines

Simple machines reduce effort and make work easier.

Machine Use
🪝 Pulley Lifting heavy loads
📐 Inclined Plane Move objects with less effort
🔧 Lever Lift heavy objects using a fulcrum

📖 Important Formula Sheet

  • ✅ Work = Force × Displacement
  • ✅ Kinetic Energy = ½mv²
  • ✅ Potential Energy = mgh
  • ✅ Mechanical Energy = KE + PE
  • ✅ Power = Work / Time
  • ✅ Mechanical Advantage = Load / Effort

🎯 Exam Tips

  • ⭐ Learn all formulas.
